Beauty is Soul Deep

Thanks to God's divine orchestration, social media, and Proverbs 31 Ministries' She Speaks Conference this summer, I am able to introduce Tracy Steel to you, today's guest blogger (and my new friend!). I continue to be amazed at how the Lord has worked out the details of this Stress Point study; He surely was in the details of connecting me to Tracy. She is a precious sister who loves the Lord and lives to be a blessing - particularly to young women like those of you participating in the study. I am confident you will be blessed by the words she shares here today...

I stopped watching the TV show Project Runway recently.
Since I am not a fashionista, I assumed that that Ms. Heidi Klum could teach me how to be beautiful.

Nope. No bueno. Didn’t happen…

After watching 4 seasons of the show, I learned that I naturally do not understand the fashion world’s definition of beautiful. The judges’ favorites down the runway would make me gasp. I mean, could the model actually wear the fabric concoction on a windy day? Would it actually survive having a toddler, diaper bag, and purse hanging off of it?

Nope. No bueno. It would fall apart…

I am about to turn 37. I have been married for 4 ½ years now, and am a blessed mommy to two toddlers. I can tell you that the body I possessed in my 20s is long gone. Like way, way, way gone…

I am also a retired ballerina. I know a lot about skinny and not so skinny mirrors. I know what it is like to endure “weigh-ins” and to have a dance teacher scrutinize every part of my body.

Now that pregnancy and a slower metabolism are leaving their marks, I am tempted to become unhappy with my reflection. I long for the ballerina body I once had. Unfortunately, I abused my body in the past to have one.

And I can abuse it again. But I am choosing not to.

Getting over Tracy

In High School, I didn’t know Jesus as my Savior. I didn’t care that I was defiling or harming the body that God lovingly created. I continued to worship the expectations of others and the numbers on the scale. However, I accepted Jesus as my Savior in my mid-20s. Living at the foot of God’s throne has changed everything for me!

Over the past decade, I have seen a shift in how I view my body, identity, and purpose. Jesus IS helping me to “get over myself” by replacing my temptation to make much of Tracy, with a desire to make “much of Him.” (Stress Point, page 72) The more I study Scripture, the more my thoughts shift their focus from being on my exterior to being on my interior…

I have found freedom in learning that beauty is not skin deep.

Beauty is soul deep.

The skinny from the mirror of God’s Word:

“For all that exists originates in Him, comes through Him, and is moving toward Him; so give Him the glory forever. Amen.”
~Romans 11:36, The Voice Translation (Stress Point, page 63)

I love this verse because it teaches that we are moving towards Jesus
2 Corinthians 3:18 also teaches that we are being transformed into the image of Jesus Christ one degree of glory at a time. While my body is aging, my soul is being transformed. God is turning it into something beautiful and will be giving me a new body when I meet Him face to face.

Can someone join me in saying Hallelujah, and bring on the cheesecake in Heaven? Just sayin’…

I am still no fashionista, BUT…

God savors me because I am His daughter. He is teaching me that soul beauty is created over time. He is helping me to display true beauty through a spirit of: patience, love, humility, self-control, and gentleness.

While I still don’t understand the fashion world’s definition of beauty, I embrace God’s opinion of it. He is the One who determines what beauty is, I do not. The fashion world does not. Scripture promises that the souls God sends down the runway of life will hold up during the winds of change, time, pain, and yes, even toddlerhood.

So let’s repeat the following sentence from Stress Point often and with faith as we notice chin hair, or when we feel our limbs jiggle after we have stopped moving:

“He said, ______ (insert your name), your beauty and worth are not determined by what you see in a mirror. Take your focus off of yourself and find focus on Me.” (Stress Point, page 70)

Blessings as you share His beauty with the world around you!

YOU will never be out of style because you are HIS.
