Healing Rain

Some years ago, Michael W. Smith came out with a song called “Healing Rain.” Nice song. The verses are actually pretty powerful. However, I never quite understood a small little section that says... “Healing rain is falling down… I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid...” I kinda found that a little strange. I mean, would anyone in need of some serious healing actually be afraid? Wouldn’t they be more excited than frightened? Happy? Humbled? Blessed? I honestly never gave it a ton of thought; it was just something that very quickly ran through my mind when I would hear the song every so often.

Pause right there for a few…

Well, last week I went to a prayer meeting and the main focus was to pray specifically for physical healing. Before that part of the service, a message was shared about the importance of the Word and the effect it has on us physically. It was amazing. Some of the scriptures that were shared are ones that I’ve probably heard and read hundreds of times. And even though the verses are clearly pertaining to physical health and life, I never really stopped to meditate on the power and truth in that regard… particularly in the Proverbs…

My sons, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity… Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. –
Proverbs 3:1-2, 7-8

My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body.
Proverbs 4:20-22

A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.

Proverbs 15:30

As believers in Jesus, we know the power of the Word of God and all that it does. In Psalm 119 alone, there are multiple examples… The Word keeps our way pure (v. 9), removes scorn and contempt (22), strengthens (28), keeps us from deceitful ways (29), gives us understanding (34), preserves our life (37), allows us to walk in freedom (45), gives hope (49), comfort (50), knowledge and good judgment (66). The Word of God is eternal (89) and sweet (103), it makes us wiser (98), is a lamp to our feet and light to our path (105), is trustworthy (138), and true (160). It is the joy of our heart (111) and brings great peace (165). Bottom line, God's Word totally transforms us, inside and out.

We know that faith comes by hearing the Word of God (
Romans 10:17) and after hearing the message that evening, there was great faith in the building – definitely in my heart. I personally was in need of physical healing in a number of areas including horrible migraines for a long time and the fact that I have not been able to sleep peaceably for over a year, which affected all sorts of stuff. A call was given for those in need of healing to come forward for prayer. I truly felt expectant that God would touch me. There was no doubt that He was at work. The presence of God was so evident and so powerful (it was seriously one of the most amazing prayer meetings I'd been at in a very long time). After I was prayed for, I went back to my seat and just continued to pray and worship as the band played. Then, I hear the “Healing Rain” song. Except it was just those two random lines over and over again, the ones I always found to be a little strange… “Healing rain is falling down, healing rain is falling down, I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid…”

All of a sudden, a major light bulb turned on and something clicked. It’s possible that what took place in my heart will not be expressed accurately through what I write, or maybe it means something totally different to you, or maybe I’m just seriously delayed, all I know is that my eyes were opened just a little wider and a deeper work was done inside of me at that moment. “Healing rain is falling down…” Healing requires faith, which is the opposite of fear. “I’m not afraid…” Sometimes we’re faithless and afraid of the unknown. Yet as God’s children, we know that our Father has great plans for us... plans to prosper us and not to harm us (
Jeremiah 29:11). But when we’re walking in fear, it’s hard to keep that perspective. I've been in that place more often than I'd like to admit.

I compared it to being afraid of a procedure or a surgery, even though we know it’s the best thing for us and will obviously make us better. If it actually works, then life could be completely different. There’s no telling of what’s in store then. That could be very exciting, or it could be very scary. And, in this case, on that night, suddenly I was overwhelmed by the fact that if God actually heals us, (whether physically or emotionally, instantaneously or through a different process He chooses) … then what? Life will be completely different. And there’s no telling of what’s in store. I mean, His Word says it. No eye has seen or ear heard what God has in store for those who wait for Him (
Isaiah 64:4). Imagine if we all waited in faith for Him? And truly believed that He has the power to really do above all we could ever ask or think (Ephesians 3:20)? I suppose that can be a scary thought without the healing rain falling down. But, when considering it with the mind of Christ, it's a thought that's beyond awesome!

Anyway, I apologize if this post doesn't exactly flow. It may not make total sense to you. Normally with experiences like this, it's hard to totally communicate what’s going on in my heart, so I’m sure I’m not expressing it the way I feel it. All I know is that something powerful took place and I've been rejoicing in God’s healing power ever since.
I pray you can experience that same power as well.

P.S. - I've slept peacefully every night since then...

“Healing rain is falling down…
Healing rain is falling down…
I’m not afraid … I’m not afraid …”
