Happy New Year!

2009. Wow. Remember when partying 'like it's 1999' seemed far away? And 2010 was just an 80's sci-fi movie? That seems like a lifetime ago. Time flies ... much faster than we realize ... and it will continue to do so. New Year's has been a special holiday for me since I really committed my life to Christ. A spiritual birthday so to speak, acknowledging another year serving the Lord, another year of His faithfulness.
Last night I went to church with my parents and was incredibly blessed. The text for my Dad's sermon was from Ephesians 4:22-24. He shared what the Lord showed him both personally and for the church. His challenge was for us to put off our old self, allow the Lord to adjust our attitude and then put on Christ. It was a powerful message that definitely spoke to my heart and I've continued to meditate on it throughout the day. Below are some of the notes I wrote down...
(1) Put off GREED and put on GENEROSITY .... The definition for greed is: 'an excessive desire to acquire or possess, as wealth or power, beyond what one needs or deserves' ... (2) Put off MINDLESS CHOICES and put on REASON ... We need the ability to make wise decisions - knowing both the consequences and the rewards ... (3) Put off the TV (or internet, or Wii, or whatever) and put on COMMUNICATION ... Technology is causing our society to neglect talking to one another and developing relationships ... (4) Put off BEING EASILY OFFENDED and put on THE LORD'S WORK ... We need sensitivity but: FORGIVE PEOPLE! GET OVER IT! GET BACK TO THE LORD'S WORK! ... (5) Put off DOUBTS and put on FAITH ... "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." - Hebrews 11:1.
This was a great way for me to finish out 2008 and begin a new year. God has done so much this past year in my life personally but there is so much more ahead that I know He wants to do. The only way this will happen though is by our obeying His word. We need to put on Christ in order to go ahead. We can't go forward without being made new in the attitude of our minds. Romans 12:2 says "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will." Any believer who truly wants to go forward in their walk with the Lord wants to do His will. But without a transformation of the mind, we won't hear clearly what God is speaking to us specifically. And He has something specific for each one of us. He has given us a purpose ... a hope ... a future. God has much in store for His people.

Let's put on Christ this year (and generosity, reason, communication, the Lord's work and faith). Let real faith rise up for ourselves this year so we can believe Him for great things in 2009! Great things in our hearts, in our loved ones, in our own futures. God wants to use each of us! I pray that 2009 would be a year where we would serve and love God more this year than we ever have. The best is yet to come.
"Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen." - Ephesians 3:20-21
